CYC: A High School Attendance Story

Essential Question:
What are the primary factors that affect student attendance in high school?

Final installment of the working data story for and with the Providence Children and Youth Cabinet. Our focus high schools are the Providence Academy of International Studies (PAIS) and William B. Cooley, Sr. Health & Science Technology High School (Cooley).

What are the key factors affecting attendance in high school?

Factors that affect attendance in other grade levels continue to affect high school attendance. These include:

  • Prior academic performance
  • Prior attendance
  • ELL status
  • Suspensions
  • Transportation
  • Community safety

In addition, stressors that are unique to high school students include:

  • Work employment
  • Teen pregnancy & parenthood

The following pages will explore these factors for students attending one of the two schools now merged into the Juanita Sanchez Complex. Indicators are grouped by social ecology categories.
