High School Absenteeism and College Persistence

Essential Question:
What are the effects of chronic absenteeism in high school on post-secondary persistence and success?

A data story previewing the linkage of data from K-12 to higher education.

What is Chronic Absenteeism?

Throughout this story, we break high school absenteeism into three categories: low, moderate, and chronic.

Low: Students who miss less than 5% or no more than 9 days in a typical school year.

Moderate: Students who who miss between 5% and 10% or 10 to 17 days in a typical school year.

Chronic: Students who miss 10% or more, or at least 18 days in a typical school year.

These numbers do not discriminate between excused and unexcused absences; lost school time is lost school time.
