iIndicator Details

% Embarrassed via Electronics (MH)

Short Definition: % of students who had embarrassing picture or rumors spread via electronic devices within the last year (SurveyWorks: Middle and High Only)

Long Definition:

The percent of students within a given school who said they have had embarrassing pictures or rumors spread about them on the internet or by text message within the last year. This question was answered as part of the SurveyWorks questionnaire and was included in the surveys for Middle and High school students. SurveyWorks is the Rhode Island Department of Education's new opinions-and-perceptions survey and is administered annually to all students in grades 4-12. SurveyWorks is age appropriate for each level — elementary, middle and high school — but it covers roughly the same areas of questioning for all three levels.

Data Type: Numeric

Purpose:

This indicator allows us to measure and compare the different types of bullying experienced among students. Understanding what types of bullying exist is important to reducing bullying in schools.

Limitations:

Versions of this question vary slightly by grade level. The High school version reads "I have had embarrassing pictures or rumors spread about me by email, text message, or a social networking site" while the Middle School version reads "I have had embarrassing pictures or rumors spread about me on the internet or by text message" which may limit the ability to compare the responses directly. The information is self-reported.

Universe: All students enrolled in grades 6-12 in a RI public school who participated in the SurveyWorks survey.
