% Skip Reason - Bullying (MH)

Short Definition: % of students who skipped school because they were being bullied at school (SurveyWorks: Middle and High Only)

Long Definition:

The percent of students within a given school who skipped school because they were bullied. This question was answered as part of the SurveyWorks questionnaire and was included in the surveys for Middle and High school students. SurveyWorks is the Rhode Island Department of Education's new opinions-and-perceptions survey and is administered annually to all students in grades 4-12. SurveyWorks is age appropriate for each level — elementary, middle and high school — but it covers roughly the same areas of questioning for all three levels.

Purpose:

This indicator allows us to measure and comparethe implications of bullying. Understanding these implications is important to reducing bullying in schools.

Limitations:

High school students were only asked this question if they had skipped class within the past year, whereas middle school students were only asked this question if they had skipped school within the past year. See '% Skipped School (MH)' indicator.

The information is self-reported.

Universe: Students enrolled in grades 6-12 in a RI public school who participated in the SurveyWorks survey and said that they had skipped school in the past year.
