% Smoked Cigarettes 1+ - SALT ONLY

Short Definition: % students who smoked cigarettes 1+ times during the past 30 days

Long Definition:

Percent of students who reported that they smoked cigarettes on one or more of the past 30 days. This indicator is discontinued for future comparisons because of lack of consistency between the questions in the SALT survey and the new SurveyWorks! questions.

Purpose:

Besides being a predictor of negative health outcomes, cigarette smoking is a marker for many other risky behaviors such as substance use, risky sexual behavior, physical fighting, carrying a weapon, and attempting suicide.

Limitations:

This indicator is discontinued for future comparisons because of lack of consistency between the questions in the SALT survey and the new SurveyWorks! questions.

Universe: Rhode Island public elementary, middle, high school students in participating schools and grades
