Long Definition:

Percent of high school students reporting they had smoked cigarettes on at least 1 day during the 30 days before the survey.

Purpose:

Besides being a predictor of negative health outcomes, cigarette smoking is a marker for many other risky behaviors such as substance use, risky sexual behavior, physical fighting, carrying a weapon, and attempting suicide.

Limitations:

These data represent results from a survey. Be wary of interpreting data when there are large confidence intervals around the estimates. States with weighted data achieved at least a 60% overall response rate. With weighted data, it is possible to say, for example, “X% of high school students in the state smoked cigarettes in past month.” Refer to the “Quality” indicator to determine which states’ data are weighted.
